Physical Education (PE)

PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN THE EYFS

Children in Nursery receive daily access to activities indoors and outdoors that build on their fine and gross motor development. Children are encouraged to develop their core strength and gross motor skills to ensure that they are ready for fine motor movements.  We encourage children to be active and use games, songs, dances and yoga within the class and outside.  Children are taught to move confidently in a range of ways; for example, by using large muscle movements to wave flags, ribbons, streamers, paint and make marks.   Children are encouraged to use the balance bikes, trikes, taxis and scooters. Children are taught to develop ball skills by throwing, catching and kicking a ball. In the summer term Nursery children have PE lessons in the hall taught by the class teacher. Children in Reception continue to develop their gross and fine motor skills, children have daily access to their own outdoor area and Templemoor Mile.  Our Reception children have one taught PE session per week alongside continuous use of the physical environment. This taught session focuses on fundamental movement skills.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN YEARS 1 AND 2

In Key Stage One, children take part in two sessions of physical activity each week. Children are taught by a specialist coach or the class teacher using the Getset4PE platform. Each lesson provides challenge and enjoyable learning by using a range of sporting activities such as: games, net and wall games, striking and fielding games, gymnastics and dance. In all areas of PE staff follow the skills and knowledge documents to ensure progression. Staff are regularly given opportunities to take part in internal and CPD opportunities to ensure that we are providing quality provision.

Pupils are taught about how to handle equipment and move safely within gymnastics and games. Within all lessons, there is an emphasis on pupils being able to achieve their personal best and building resilience. Pupils are taught how to play fairly, creating a sense of teamwork, friendship and respect.

Our teachers assess the children’s work in PE, both by making informal judgements, as they observe them during lessons, and through assessing against the specific objectives set out in the National Curriculum. These are recorded against half termly objectives.

Subject vocabulary is displayed and reinforced by teachers, giving the pupil’s the correct terminology to carefully critique their own and other’s performance. They are given opportunities to work as experts in a variety of sports to ensure they are given chances to demonstrate good practice as well as the teacher modelling.

Children have half a term of We Are Adventurers in Year 1 and Year 2, where they are engaged in physical learning activities outdoors, appreciating how to care for and respect the environment whilst also looking after themselves and others. Links to our PSHE curriculum and Rights Respecting work are made during these sessions.

Children are also given many opportunities to take part in activities outside of their normal physical education (PE) lessons.  Children throughout the school regularly run the Templemoor Mile and have frequent movement breaks (e. g. Active Blasts on Imoves such as body combat or yoga). Our lunchtime staff also support the pupils to be physical and provide the pupils with guided games and a range of equipment. Games and challenges take place takes place at lunchtimes and are very popular with both Year 1 and 2 children.

We hold Multisport Clubs and a We Are Adventurers Club for children in Year 1 and 2 to attend afterschool. Throughout the school year we hold a range of fun, high energy events which link to sporting fixtures such as our Euro Football Event, Mini Olympics, and our annual Sponsored Event. Children are given opportunities to compete against each other in a controlled, safe and fun way on Sports Day. We promote a love of physical activity and healthy lifestyles giving children the opportunity to try a range of different sports and dances.
